Video compression guides

Choose a video compressor for your task

What is the best video compressor for a short clip?

The best choice depends on your file and destination. Check that the tool can decode your source, export an accepted format, retain the audio you need and show the final size. CorvexsDigital offers free local processing for clips up to 100 MB, five minutes and 4K input. It is not a replacement for an editor when you need long-video processing, trimming or an exact output size.

How do I reduce video size for email?

Start with 720p and Balanced, keep audio if it matters, and compare the downloaded file with your email provider’s attachment limit. If it is still too large, try Smallest file or 480p from the original. Re-encoding takes roughly the clip’s duration; keep this tab visible. Email attachment limits vary, so there is no universal preset that guarantees delivery.

How do I compress video for a website?

Choose a format your publishing system and visitors’ browsers can play. Use the MP4 compressor when MP4 export is available in your browser, or the WebM compressor for a compatible destination. Check movement, small text and sound after each export. Never rename a WebM file to MP4: changing the extension does not convert it.

For a web performance budget, see how bitrate, resolution and duration affect video file size.

A practical workflow for smaller videos

A short product demonstration, a support screen recording, and a family clip do not need the same export settings. Start with the destination: does it accept WebM, does it require MP4, and what detail must stay legible? CorvexsDigital creates a new delivery copy while leaving your original untouched. It is designed for short clips that your browser can decode, not large film projects or archival conversion.

1. Establish a baseline

Choose a clip up to 100 MB and five minutes, with an input resolution up to 4K. Start at 720p and Balanced. Leave audio enabled when speech or sound matters. Select an output format accepted by your destination; MP4 is offered only when the current browser can encode it. If the format is unavailable, another browser or a dedicated editor may be necessary.

2. Run one export and inspect it

Press Compress video and keep the tab visible and the device awake. The file plays internally while a new version is recorded, so allow approximately the clip’s duration. The source audio is routed into the output rather than through your speakers. Use Cancel if you need to stop. Moving to another tab stops processing rather than presenting a partially recorded clip as a successful result.

3. Judge the result by its purpose

Watch the exported clip before sharing it. For a support recording, pause on the smallest menu label or error message. For a product demonstration, check fine detail during movement. Listen to speech and check that the end of the clip is present. The preview is useful, but you should also open the saved download in the application where it will be used.

When the output is still too large

Try Smallest file or a lower resolution from the original. The presets select encoding rates; they do not target an exact number of megabytes. A 60-second clip encoded near 1.5 megabits per second would use roughly 11.25 MB for video alone: 60 × 1,500,000 ÷ 8. Audio and container overhead add data, and a browser can choose a different effective rate. This is an illustrative calculation, not a measured result or a size promise.

An already efficient input may become larger after re-encoding. In that case, keep the original if it meets the destination’s requirements. Repeatedly compressing a compressed result can reduce quality without solving the real problem. If you need trimming, embedded subtitles, multiple audio tracks, HDR preservation, or an exact-size MP4, use a workflow designed for those requirements.

Privacy and troubleshooting

The selected video stays in the browser during this workflow. Hosting still handles normal page requests, and the separate contact form transmits the text you choose to send. Local processing does not remove information visible or audible in your clip. Unsupported-codec errors mean the browser cannot decode or encode that combination, even when the filename ends in .mp4.

If processing stalls, retry a shorter clip, close memory-heavy applications, and keep the page in the foreground. If the problem repeats, report the browser, file format, size, and exact error. Do not attach private recordings. For still images taken from a video, use the image compressor; changing a video’s extension will not create an image.

Which videos can I use?

Choose MP4, WebM, MOV, or M4V, up to 100 MB, 5 minutes, and 4K resolution. Your browser must be able to play the codec inside the file. A file extension alone does not guarantee support.

How long does compression take?

The video is played and re-encoded on your device, so allow about the duration of the clip. Keep this tab visible and your device awake. Hiding the tab stops the job so you can retry without downloading an incomplete result.

Will my video become smaller?

Lower resolution and the Smallest file preset generally reduce the output, but there is no fixed size guarantee. The bitrate adapts to the original file. A compressed download is offered only if it is smaller; otherwise you can keep or download your original. Audio is kept by default; you can remove it.

Why is MP4 not always available?

Encoding support depends on your browser. The format selector only offers available formats. WebM may not be accepted by every messaging app or upload form.

Does the tool upload my video?

No. The selected video is processed in your browser. There is no camera or microphone access. Normal requests still load the website. Read the privacy policy.
